I recognize that language learning is not just about vocabulary and grammar; it’s also about understanding the culture, history, and social context in which the language is used. I aim to immerse my students in Italian culture, through activities such as discussing Italian art, cinema, literature, and history, giving them a holistic view of the language. By connecting language with cultural themes, students not only learn Italian in a practical way but also develop a deeper appreciation for the culture itself. The visual culture component of my master’s program has also informed my teaching methods. I’ve learned how powerful visual stimuli can be in enhancing understanding and retention of new information. I incorporate a variety of visual resources—such as images, videos, films, and even artworks—into my lessons to make learning more dynamic and interactive. For example, I might use a short clip from an Italian film to illustrate conversational language in context or explore a famous Italian artwork to discuss cultural references, idioms, or historical events. This use of visual media engages students' senses and makes the learning process more immersive and enjoyable. Furthermore, the research and critical thinking skills I developed during my studies have strengthened my ability to structure lessons thoughtfully and engage students in deeper reflection about the Italian language and culture. I am trained to ask questions, analyze different perspectives, and encourage students to think critically about what they are learning. This helps my students not only absorb the language but also understand its nuances and connections to broader cultural themes. The interdisciplinary approach of the program has also enhanced my adaptability as a teacher. It has made me more creative in the classroom, finding ways to blend language instruction with cultural exploration, whether that’s through storytelling, visual arts, or discussions of contemporary Italian social issues.
